Chapter Eleven

April 14, 1912

“And just where were ye two last night?” Seamus’s voice oozed curiosity as he sat at the table in the third-class dining hall. With a plate, laden with breakfast ham, eggs, a jacket potato, and a bowl of oatmeal he nestled in his seat, wiggling his shoulders.

“Are ye going to eat all of that?” Declan pointed to the spread.

“That I am, and ye’re gonna watch me too.” Seamus flashed a big smile then dove into the food with his fork, shoving a huge bite of eggs into his mouth and chewing with gusto. “Now are ye gonna answer my question? Where were ye two last night?”

“We decided to spend some time alone.” Declan shrugged as he gave me a sideways glance. My stomach flipped, and I clutched my glass of water so tight my knuckles whitened.

“Well, we figured that much for ourselves. But where? We looked for ye everywhere.” Seamus glanced at Emily sitting next to him. “Though I suspect Johanna and Machelle didn’t even though they said they did.” His voice lowered into a growl. “They are off with those men they met, doing Christ knows what until the wee hours of the morning.”

“Speak of the devils,” Emily mumbled. Her once lit up smile faded into a grimace that seemed to darken her whole face.

Before any of us could ask what she meant, Johanna and Machelle approached the table. Giggling, they barely noticed us as they sat down at the table with their own trays of food.

“And what’s so bleeding funny this morning?” Seamus asked them.

“None of yer business, Seamus Brady.” With the bark to her tone, Machelle cocked her head to one side, her eyelashes fluttered as she rolled her eyes.

“The hell it isn’t. What are ye thinking running off with men ye don’t know?”

“Do we have to keep having this conversation?” Declan asked.

“That we do, and I’d thank ye to keep out of it.” Seamus pointed at Declan before shoveling another bite into his mouth and turning toward Machelle once more. “Ye two ought to be ashamed. What would yer parents think of yer behavior?”

“My behavior? Exactly what do ye think they would have a problem with? Are ye honestly trying to say they would oppose me getting to know a nice young man?” A smile whispered across her face as she paused, and I caught a devilish look to her eye. Like a cat about to pounce and play with a mouse, I’d seen that expression on her before, and I knew it wouldn’t bode well for Seamus.

“Machelle, I don’t think—”

“Oh, ye keep out of this, Siobhan.” She turned her attention back to Seamus and straightened her shoulders as she brushed her hair behind one side. “A nice young man who might be my husband one day,” she finished.

Seamus opened his mouth, but before he could get a word out, he inhaled a breath and a chunk of food went down his windpipe. He began coughing and his eyes pooled with water until tears ran down his cheeks.
